Verongula Sponge

Verongula reiswigi

Description:

This can grow as a very large tube sponge, single or in groups. Its walls are very thick. Occasionally a solitary tube is short and thick, more barrel shaped than a tube. Its colouration is a mix of yellow and green, and the surface pattern is a network of very pronounced ridges. The inside of the tube is usually yellow. The combination of size, surface pattern and colour makes this species distinctive. Thick-walled barrels-jugs, single or in groups. Greenish to purplish in the outside, bright yellow inside, turning purple in air. Skeleton is a pithed spongin fiber network forming the walls of a honeycomb, which shown on the surface.

Habitat:

Seen in Alice in Wonderland, Bonaire.
