Butterfly: Unknown Type

Order: Lepidoptera

Description:

Hello! My name is Joshua Buce! While searching for honeybees, my friend Alyson and I discovered a butterfly in the flower bush as well. Its color on the outside of its wings were much more flattering than when its wings closed together. The outside had some brighter orange tints, but darker shades still in the middle. When the butterfly would close its wings it was more of a grayish color. It was very bizarre. I assume most of this was for protection against predators that way it has the ability to blend in with wooded surroundings.

Habitat:

We spotted the butterfly in the same flower bush as the bumblebees we saw earlier. The flower bush had many smaller purple flowers and was at least 5 feet tall.

Notes:

The butterfly was way more frightened to see me than any of the bees. It frequently would attempt to fly away from my camera. However, I did get to see it siphon off nectar from a flower, which I thought was very cool.

Butterflies are my favorite. I get hummingbirds around my house, but I've never seen a butterfly. Good pic!

I have this same plant, and the butterflies love it! Sadly, there haven't been many out and about with our current heat wave. All my shrubs are extremely thankful for the little rain we got this morning. ~Sims, Sara
