Eastern Mud Turtle

Kinosternon subrubrum subrubrum

Description:

Approximately 3 inches long

Habitat:

Parking lot - adjacent to pond & creek on the north, and Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge to the south.

Notes:

5:25am (20 minutes before sunrise). Never heard of this species before, and now I've seen two this month. This is the second. The first was about 3 miles south of this one, also spotted in the road at sunrise... Both were moved out of the line of car traffic - using special care to keep their head facing in the same direction.
