Looked deeper and found similar in Species Melissodes bimaculata; http://bugguide.net/node/view/69274 It certainly looks the same superficially. Bees are not my area, but I had one that looked a lot like yours.

They certainly are Jacob! I think it is some kind of carpenter bee but I've not found a match yet. I'll probably submit it to bugguide & see if they can help.
