Libellula pulchella
This is one of Minnesota's largest dragonflies with a body length of about 5 cm (2 in). The image is of a male. Females have similar markings, but lack the white spots on the wings.
Breeds in quiet ponds, but adults may be found in upland areas.
This is a common dragonfly in North America and is certainly common here in Minnesota. They tend to have favorite perches and they often return to those perches shortly after being frightened making it easy to photograph these large, charismatic insects. I've handled them many times and they will bite if handled carelessly. Their bite is a bit of a pinch that roughens the skin and is not painful, unless they are given the chance to dig through the skin which they can do in a few seconds.
