Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. sandwicense

Description:

Hawaiian endemic plant, this subspecies consists of but a few individuals, all in fenced enclosures. They are easy to spot, but only in their very limited range. They may live up to 40 years before flowering as this individual is doing.

Habitat:

Alpine desert on slopes of Mauna Kea in Hawaii

Notes:

Spotted in fenced enclosure about 50 meters east of Hale Pohaku at 9000 feet elevation.

That really takes me back. When I was a child I went up Haleakala, on Maui. The name and image of those unusual plants have stuck with me over the decades.
