Well toads have rougher, dry skin, and they have paratoid glands (big lumps on the back of the head). Frogs are generally shiny and smooth, and are normally found around water. I've had that almost happen while birding as well!

Thank you for the correction. BTW how can you tell it's a toad? I almost stepped on him while I was birding.
