Carpenter Ant

Camponotus sericeiventris

Description:

Large worker ant of around 13-15mm in length, with a large almost heart-shaped head. It was black with a very conspicuous golden abdomen. I haven't been able to ID it past the possibility of carpenter ant... Suggestions welcome! I watched it for quite a while, as it remained on the same spot on the floor, only occasionally lunging at smaller ants that would come too close. It was extremely aggressive in the way it grabbed and chopped up the other ants (pictures #2-4). I don't know whether it was being territorial...

Habitat:

Rainforest around Palenque in Chiapas, Mexico.
