walkingstick mimic/horsehead grasshopper

Pseudoproscopia sp (possibly)scabra

Description:

The female of the species is much larger, heftier and a brownish color, whereas thee male is very slender(although the eyes are about the same size, giving it an een more confused cartoonish appearance than the female). It looks like a walking, stick for the large hind legs that allow it to jump (much like a click beetle in manner) when startled Note the eyes near the top of the head and the mouth beneath the most bulbous part of its "face." Looking head on it looks like a cartoon horse head The last two pictures show how well it camoflages - as it is not symmetrical and thus looks like a broken twig.

Habitat:

Rainforest at the edge of Yasuni in the grounds of Yarina lodge. I first found him pretending to be a piece of wire wrapped around the base of a tree

Notes:

My first clue that this wasn't the usual stick insect was when my camera accidentally brushed him and he sprung straight in the air, flipping over and landing back on his feet on the ground
