Tiger Leafwing caterpillar, midsize

Consul fabius

Description:

Every time I think I've seen all striking caterpillars around, I stumble at another one! At first, I thought this cat was dead and covered with fungi. Then I discovered that 1, it wasn't dead, and 2, what I thought to be a fungal infestation is actually its real color. The distribution of the white dots is too symmetrical, a fungi infestation would be more randomly spread. My conclusion: this caterpillar takes the "bird dropping mimicry" to the highest level! An earlier instar of this caterpillar can be seen here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/180...

nice, but not so pretty spotting my friend. This caterpillar, would never win any type of beauty pageant, but it is lovely in its own way. Nice spotting Sergio

I wouldn't touch it with gloves... :-)

It doesn't look very tasty so I imagine it's a good disguise!
