Platterful mushroom

Description:

Common name: the platterful mushroom. Knife in photo is 3.5" long. Cap of this specimen was 12"+ across. Growing at the base of a red oak tree in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Habitat:

Mixed woods - oak, birch, conifers, etc.

Notes:

I originally ID'd this as Pluteus cervinus, the deer mushroom. Bitter, inedible.
