1" long bizarre looking fly. It looked like a cross between a dragon fly & a robber fly!

That's great! Their larvae are scary looking but very neat! I wouldn't want to be an ant or smaller insect around those guys.

Karen, you are finding some pretty cool critters! This awesome insect is an Owlfly, Family Ascalaphidae. They are related to Antlions and Lacewings. I am not sure of the species at this time (and too tired at the moment to sort through them. I think one of the ones in Genus Ululodes.
