Ululone appenninico - Apennine Yellow-bellied Toad

Bombina pachypus

Description:

We found these very small amphibians in the drying up stream bed of Rio Magno at Malbacco. Lucia who grew up nearby said she never saw them when she was young. She is convinced they are a miniature toad species while I had great difficulty distinguishing whether they are toads or frogs.

Habitat:

Rio Magno mountain stream above Serravezza in the Apuan Alpes at what seem to be record low flow water levels.
