yes the peak head is also a given, when added to the stiff neck it really makes the birds look funny

One of the characteristics is a peaked head, but if they have been diving for food it is often not visible. The ring on the neck is chestnut color on a black neck. Not real obvious. :)

You can really tell by the way they hold their heads. It almost looks like they have stiff necks. Plus the ring on the bill. Though they are called Ring-necks you can barely see the rings.
