I kinda agree with behemoth.williams3. It looks more like a cross between a Tufted and a Pochard. Besides these two are diving ducks and Mallards are not.

Feel I should point out that Tufted Ducks and Pochards do over winter in and around the area. Though this fella was spotted in June hanging around with a load of Mallards.
