Scorpion Fly

Parnorpa spp.

Description:

Apologies for the blurriness. This rather small fellow is most likely in the Parnorpa, but narrowing the ID farther is beyond me. Scorpion flies do not sting and are generally beneficial scavengers.

Habitat:

Spotted in damp mixed woods, near the garden. Perching on an rather elderly leaf.

To narrow down insect IDs, you can often call on the folks at BugGuide.net - you submit your photo there and they frequently can help figure out the species.
