Ah! Good point. I was with a naturalist and I thought he said something about it being an epiphyte... or maybe he was pointing out that it wasn't! Times like this that I wish I didn't have just a sticky note pad to write down notes. Thanks for the input

It may be a locust. They have thorns like this that grow on the tree. Not an epiphyte, but an actual part of the tree! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gleditsia
