Eastern Box Turtle

Terrapene carolina carolina

Description:

Reddish eyes, so probably a male. That is a dead cicada next to him, but he was not eating it.

Habitat:

open woodland

Notes:

Pretty sure this is the Eastern Box; I have read in the past that other subspecies are sometimes found in Maryland but the Md. DNR web page doesn't mention other box turtles in the state.
