Predaceous Diving Beetle

Description:

Large predaceous beetles. The adults are able to fly and swim by holding air bubbles under their elantra. The larvae are fully aquatic and feed on mosquito larvae and other macroinvertebrates. Large larvae will even attack small fish. High diversity of beetles are present in wetlands of Alberta, Canada.

Habitat:

Wetlands and lakes.

Notes:

This guy was found in a large Provincial Park located right in the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
