Neurothemis sp.
i have called this spotting Neurothemis sp. as a temporary expedient, rather than calling it Neurothemis terminata terminata which is what I believe it to be. The reason for this is as follows. When I first took a picture of this kind of Dragonfly, a few years ago, there was a website called "insectoidinfo" and that (according to my notes made back then) is where the identification N. t. terminata came from. That website no longer exists and I can't use it as a citation. My first reaction was to fall back on the species Neurothemis terminata which is listed as present in the Philippines by Wikipedia. The problem is that this spotting doesn't look exactly like N. terminata. There are many similarities, including the all-important abdominal segment markings, but the background colour of the abdomen is yellow, not red like N. terminata. If I remember correctly, that difference is what made this dragonfly an ssp. So, for the moment, I will go with Neurothemis sp. and keep on searching for my long-lost ssp.
This Dragonfly was spotted in a rice field.
I don't know if the Project Noah Mission "Odonata in the Philippines" might be able to throw any light on this matter. If that were possible, it would be very helpful to me and probably to all of the P. N. members in the Philippines
