Green June Beetle

Cotinis nitida

Description:

Lots of these common beetles were flying in and out of the willows along the shoreline. Adult beetles are ¾ to 1 inch long. The adult’s upper body is velvety green to dull brown with lengthwise stripes of green with yellow-orange margins on the hardened front wing.

Habitat:

A riparian wildlife area along the edge of Lake Lewisville. This was spotted on a day hike along the edge of the lake traveling south and west.

Notes:

Green June beetle is also called the fig-eater because of its fondness of ripe figs and other thin-skinned fruit.
