Brown Creeper

Certhia americana

Description:

The only member of its family in North America, the petite Certhia americana, belongs to the family Certhiidae, more commonly known as Tree Creepers. They tend to move up trees rather than down, distinguishing them from vaguely similar species in the family Sittidae.

Habitat:

Foraging on some birches (Betula sp.) and conifers on an oceanside forest.

Notes:

Lifer! I was so excited to find this beauty while visiting the ocean in 30°F (about -1°C) weather! Found along the path to Owls Head Lighthouse near Rockland, Maine.
