Thick-Headed Fly

Physocephala tibialis

Description:

This black and white fly is about 1 cm in length. Wings are a translucent smoky brown along the leading edge. There is a wide white band between abdomen segments 1 and 2.

Habitat:

I found this insect on a goldenrod flower in an abandoned field/city/park.

Notes:

I thought this was a thread-waisted wasp when I took the photo, but realized that it was a fly when I uploaded the photo to the computer. Had me completely fooled. The paddle-type antennae gave it away though.
