Sciurus niger
The fox squirrel (or eastern fox squirrel, Bryant's fox squirrel) (Sciurus niger) is the largest species of tree squirrel native to North America.
Spotted in the Botanical Gardens in Denver, Colorado.
@sparkle, just come across your comment. The secret for me is a good zoom. Mine is 16x, with a good lens (Leica on my Panasonic) and a good stabilizer in the camera. I take a large sized photo and crop it. Good luck!
p.s. sorry it took so long to answer you...
neck and neck for these ID's! Anyone else want to join in the identification of this squirrel!?
thanks Daniele, this little fella was definitely not small, though I'm not sure of the measurements...
Hi Pam! I seconded fox squirrel. The American red squirrel has a whiter underbelly and a white eye-ring. Its is also quite small, if you have any indication of size.
Looks like a Fox Squirrel or Eastern Fox Squirrel
