Elephant Mosquito

Toxorhynchites rutilus

Description:

Large mosquito with lovely yellow and black coloration. This species is attracted to flowers and does not bite! Larvae of this species prey on other mosquitoes making them a beneficial insect. They have raised for biological control. Nice reference info: http://www.dnr.sc.gov/cwcs/pdf/Predmosqu...

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden.

Notes:

I couldn't believe when I saw this mosquito. I kept looking at it and thinking "is this really a mosquito?" It is really big for a mosquito (see photo six for size comparison to my finger).
