Western Cicada Killer (female)

Sphecius grandis

Description:

Very large, roughly 40-45 millimeters in body length, robust. Colored as shown.

Habitat:

Several of these enormous wasps were visiting milkweed along the side of a dirt road in Chico Basin Ranch, adjacent to an artificial wetland. Surrounding habitat is degraded shortgrass prairie with cholla cacti.

Notes:

Despite their size these are not aggressive insects. I approached them easily while they were occupied with feeding.
