Sweet Potato Weevil

Cylas formicarius

Description:

Yesterday afternoon, when I went to feed the rice mill cat (as I do, twice a day, every day), the cat was not there. He is an elderly Tomcat (his name is really "Tom") and occasionally takes a nap in some dark corner. I can't leave his food, in his bowl, for him to find when he awakes, because it will be eaten by some stray animal. So, on these occasions (cat naps), I always go back later and usually manage to feed him on my second visit. Yesterday evening, when I arrived, around 8:30 pm., Tom was waiting and gazing intently into his bowl. I thought nothing of it and went about opening his can of sardines when he suddenly gave the bowl a playful smack. When I looked, this very tiny weevil was running around inside. Lucky for the weevil, Tom is getting old and must have missed it. I always have my camera when I go out, for any reason, after dark. So, I was able to take one photo, before emptying out the weevil and pouring Tom"s supper into his bowl. Sorry, not much biology here, but that is exactly what happened.

Habitat:

I spotted this weevil in the front yard of the rice mill, when I went there to feed the our cat.
