Description:

Tomato hornworm I think. Eating my tomatoes. Is this it? Is it Manduca quinquemaculata? The markings appear to be V shaped vs diagonal lines like the tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta.

Habitat:

Tomato plants. Southern piedmont of NC.

Actually this is the Tobacco Hornworm, Manduca sexta. Both M. sexta and M. quinquemaculata feed on tomatoes. M. sexta is characterized by a red, curved horn, while M. quinquemaculata has a straight, blue or black horn. Based on the red of your caterpillar's horn, it is M. sexta.
