Asian Tiger Mosquito, female

Aedes albopictus

Description:

Small aggressive mosquito. Shiny black body with striking white markings. Distinctive white stripe down center of scutum (area just behind the head). Active during the daytime (diurnal), which is different than most mosquitos.

Habitat:

Suburban yard.

Notes:

This species was introduced from Asia (arrived in a shipment of tires) and is quite invasive. They are known to spread disease. They are so prevalent in the yard that I have to put on bug spray to go into the garden or they eat me alive!

You should see my arms and legs. I was only outside without the bug spray for maybe five minutes. I had to run back inside and apply repellant, just to take photos in the garden.
