Inside was brownish and muddy.
Also I never thought about it as drilled holes. Maybe they are!! That could be a clue.

Going by the leaves it looks a bit big for Xylaria polymorpha.. maybe another truffle type fungi or puffball. I wonder what drilled holes in it.
