Sugar Maple

Acer saccharum

Description:

Tree with almost colorful flowers.

Habitat:

Suburban lawn

Notes:

The flowers visually dominate the maple tree and are present before the leaves have emerged from the buds in the spring. In our part of New England, we expect May 7 to be the time of full leaf development because back in the 1970s we had a freak snowstorm on that day which damaged a huge number of trees. The snow stuck to the leaves and bent or broke tree limbs. We had a week off from school.
