Villa sp.
This attractive fly had a thick brown body with what looked like a single tuft of brilliant white setae at the base of each long wing. The abdominal segments were banded in black, brown and white with the white band ( of setae) being most prominent.
Spotted on a young Banksia plant in a reserve.
It was amazing to watch this fly take-off. I have not been able to find an ID for this fly until now. It is a Bee fly ! Bee fly adults are nectar feeders and important pollinators. Larvae are said to be parasitoids of other insects. Family: Bombyliidae http://www.flickr.com/photos/ogcodes/444...
