Soldier Fly

Ptecticus trivittatus

Description:

Very strange flies found mating. They appeared semi-translucent, with green eyes. The patterning on the abdomen was reminiscent of a type of Syrphid fly. We made a pile of freshly cut grass, and once it started to decay, these flies were all over it. They seem to go into it and perhaps have a colony there. When they fly, they buzz like bees.
