There are species of orb-weavers all over the world, and there is most certainly a variety found in New York. I'd even venture to guess that they appear within NYC (if that's what you meant by "New Yorker"). :-)

Orb weavers are very common here in Portland. My grandmother always called them her garden spiders because they like to make webs around the garden.
