Stagmomantis carolina are highly cannibalistic. It looks like the female is eating a male of the same species. 1st instar nymphs will cannibalize, but it gets worse at L2 and older.

Beautiful shot! The females of this species of mantis are believed to be flightless and often have shorter wings, so it's not surprising to see. She looks like this one:

The wings are so short on this mantis usually they are much longer
