Northern Paper Wasp

Polistes fuscatus

Description:

Common wasp. Reddish brown body, dark wings, somewhat variable coloration but often has yellow stripes on abdomen and and reddish spots. This species feeds mainly on plant nectar but also collects various prey insects to feed larvae.

Habitat:

Suburban backyard garden.

Notes:

Several of these wasps were visiting the Garlic Chives.
