Rooster comb gall

Nambouria sp.

Description:

A curious growth along the leaf veins flaring above (red) and below (yellow). These are caused by a pteromalid wasp and tentatively placed in the genus Nambouria. "The developing larva can be found feeding inside the gall within an oval gallery."

Habitat:

Eucalyptus leaf

Notes:

Only one single affected leaf with eight galls. ID thanks to the ever observant Argybee. NB The species is possibly Nambouria xanthops http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.10...

Interesting spotting, Martin. Saw one today with galls along the midvein - had to refer to yours for an ID !

That's a pretty convincing ID for a distinctive gall.
Thank you Argy Bee.

I think the artist might be Nambouria sp. - a gall wasp just started causing a problem in NZ... http://www.nzffa.org.nz/farm-forestry-mo...

Thank you AntónioGinjaGinja. I am completely stumped with this one. Is it viral? It was probably infected when the leaf was a bud.

Great cache Martinl, realy bizarre, very strange formation, like you say let's see if we find the artist :)
