Jalysus spinosus or wickhami
The two may occupy the same habitats and are extremely closely related. They are often confused with each other. The only reliable way to tell them apart is to see the shape of the male genital capsule, visible on ventral views only. All the eastern specimens belong to either one of these spp. (our other spp. are restricted to sw. US)
Their range is usually J. spinosus: e. NA west to the Great Plains; J. wickhami: most of the US and adjacent Canada. Their often found in feilds and shrubs. Hosts include Oenothera biennis, Gaura, Panicum, tomatoes, sometimes ornamental gourds. J. spinosus is in part predatory (survival much higher when animal food is available)
I spotted this in the picture after taking it on the mentioned date. I was lucky to get a clear shot of this half inch critter. The above info is highly confusing but it is all I have to go on. Here is the actual photo of comparison for this ID. http://bugguide.net/node/view/235219
