Bibionid Fly

Plecia sp.

Description:

Between 10-15mm long. Black with a red thorax. Must have been mating season because these insects were coupled up everywhere. Very uncomfortable for the one that got dragged around the plant backwards - they didn't like to stay still for long and were joined together for quite some time.

Thanks for the info ForestDragon. Looks like it was the female dragging the male around then!

These are called Lovebugs in some places as well due to the fact that when it is mating season they can congregate in large numbers mated, as you saw. The males have large heads and the females have small heads.
