American snout butterfly

Libytheana carinenta

Description:

Small butterfly with bronze and light brown to black markings. Long antennae and an elongated mouth. Large eyes.

Habitat:

Forest clearings and edges, and fields. This guy was found flying through our playground.

Notes:

One of our students was lucky enough to see this guy land long enough for me to get a photo. Many butterflies are in and around our school right now but few land long enough to capture a picture.
