Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle

Oryctes rhinoceros

Description:

This might be a female due to small horn size, although this is no clear indicator. It measured around 5cm in length; dark brown colouration with a circular depression behind the head and the typical 'horn'; thorax and head are fringed with orange/red hairs.

Habitat:

Found on rocks near a natural water pool in tropical rainforest.

Notes:

This species is widespread and a major pest to coconut trees and other palms. The adults feed on the leaves and burrow into the crown in large numbers, hampering growth and increasing vulnerability to infections.
