River or Wood Fern

Thelypters sp

Description:

These ferns were growing out of the rock along the shoreline of Belton Lake. You can see where the smaller ones are just clinging to the rock surface. For years I've been intrigued by these ferns, because Belton Lake is not a constant level lake. In times of heavy rains, this area may be under water for weeks, if not months at a time, yet ferns seem to return to this spot.

Habitat:

Belton Lake shoreline.
