Red young Ginger Beehive flower. Standing only 3 or 4 inches off the forest floor.
Lowland secondary forest.
The image is hazy due to the moisture on the lens. The camera actually broke after this trip :(

A forest ranger told me this was a fungi. Though it seems you are absolutely right. In Cambodia rangers are not plant experts and are there to just lead the way. Many thanks :)
I would think this is more likely a young beehive ginger flower, Zingiber spectabile.
