American (eastern) Grey Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Description:

Originally from the eastern half of North America. This species was introduced to the UK in the late 19th century. It took well to Britain's broad leaved woodland and has since expanded its range into coniferous forest and even into towns and cities. It is without doubt a very invasive and highly adaptable species.

Habitat:

These images were taken in the centre of the City of Bournmouth in the south of England at Meyrick Park. An area of mixed woodland, parkland and sports fields.

Notes:

Unfortunately it has been classed as 'undesirable' due to the enormous amount of damage this species is capable of creating in the indigenous forests of the UK. Its is also blamed for the demise of the native Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) through feed and territory competition to the point of near extinction of this latter species in the British Isles.
