White Tail Deer Male

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

Large. Males weigh 150-300#. Brown fur with white belly and inner side of legs. Large ears. Dark brown eyes. Tail is brown on outer and white on underside. Males have antlers which vary in size from animal to animal. Animal is muscular and solid. Solid hooves. Antlers are covered in a velvet made of small furs, skin and blood vessels. Velvet is being shed by this deer.

Habitat:

Wooded areas and fields.

Notes:

The male in these photos is shedding the velvet on his antlers. The velvet is shed in the fall. The antlers grow during the summer and fall and are lost in the winter. The males begin growing a new set of antlers in the spring. During the fall "rut" season, the male will rub the antlers against trees and branches leaving his scent on them. This tells females that there is a male in the area.
