Description:

The species of Pierella have larger hindwings than forewings, unique among butterflies. The oval green flash on the forewing is also unique. It is caused by diffraction, the wing scales forming a diffraction grating. Their caterpillars have been found on the host plants Heliconia and Calathea.------------------- Las especies de Pierella tienen grandes alas posteriores que las anteriores, únicos de estas mariposas. El óvalo verde brillante en el ala anterior también es único. Es causado por la difracción, las escalas de ala formando una red de difracción. Sus orugas se han encontrado en las plantas hospederas Heliconia y Calathea.

Habitat:

Pierella is a butterfly genus from the subfamily Satyrinae in the family Nymphalidae found from Mexico through Central America to South America. ----------------Pierella es un género de mariposas de la subfamilia Satyrinae perteneciente a la familia Nymphalidae, se encuentra desde México a través de América Central hasta América del Sur.
