Awesome spotting. Just as an FYI, these bats can actually roost on the ground under leaves during the winter in the Midwest, and can actually take flight from the ground.

What a rude awakening ! LOL Great to know both the beautiful bat and your household are going to be OK. I am very partial to bats. It's getting to be migration time, and these species up there DO migrate. So your little fella was probably trying to catch some shut-eye before striking out once more.

All's well. Its on the ground because I hacked the bush it was in with a machete and it fell out. I hung it back up inside the bush, so Im thinking it will be ok.

Oh poor thing! Red bats are among America's most beautiful bats. Unfortunately, a "downed" bat is likely a very sick bat, and should not be handled. A bat needs to drop from a hanging place in order to get airborne, and they can't fly if they are on the ground. It's not normal for a N. American bat to be on the ground. Scoop it into a box and put it where your dog/cat and/or kids can't get at it.

You may want to contact the PA Game Commission to come collect it. If it's just injured, they'll take to a licensed rehabber - if it's sick, it will probably have to be euthanized. :( :(
