Elk

Cervus canadensis

Notes:

The rut is in full swing here in Colorado! This was the largest of five big adult male elk I saw today. None of the other males were willing to mess with him. If he so much as looked in their direction they backed away. It was also interesting to see that most of the females wanted to be with him. At times some of the females would occasionally get herded away by another male but they would eventually return to his side as soon as they could.

Watching Bull elk during the rut is always a treat! I wonder if I saw the same documentary on wild horses... I wish I could remember the name it. It was good!

Emily-Your "notes" bring to mind a documentary I watched on Wild Horses and their behaviors. Man, I'd love to compared their behaviors with what I've observed in our White-tailed deer over the past three years..I'm so curious. Gorgeous images and series by the way! Great job!!
