Euselates cf. scenica
15mm large, black Elytra with brown pattern, brown stripes at pronotum and black lamellate antennae, the segments at the tip are flattened and look like a folding fan, (this increases the surface area available for receiving signals captured by the sensory organs in the antennae), pale brown stripes at body and brown legs.
Spotted during a day walk at Gunung Gede National Park (a dense tropical forest near a small river and waterfall), Java / Indonesia.
Euselates are scarab beetles in the subfamily Cetoniinae, are mostly diurnal and visit flowers for pollen and nectar. Euselates scenica, (Gory & Percheron, 1833). Thanks for your supportive words triggsturner
Belated congratulations on your SOTW Jordi. Great image and impressive ID investigation!
Ok done, thanks again for your support.
Although these links are really excellent and the variability is extreme I think we are on a good track! Maybe we should call it Euselates cf. senica and I try to get a confirmation by an expert. Anyway, excellent ID job, Jordi!
Thanks bayucca, following your first link I've been able to find the ID of the image you shared (Euselates scenica), after that I found better pics for this ID in the Nature Berlin Museum site (see the 2nd link on the Reference section), the image on this site allows to navigate across the Euselates collection and I found there some that matches well with my spotting, please your thoughts.
Although we still do not know the exact species on a safe base, it is a wonderful snd interesting spotting!! Congrats again, you certainly had my vote :-)!
Thanks again Felix
Belated congrats!
Thanks polilla
Thaks so much Mark

Thanks Jordi! It doesn't make the spotting any less interesting, to the contrary :-)
Hi Daniele, Bayucca, It has the closer pattern I been able to find on Internet: http://www.beetle-diversity.com/node/865...
It's true that the spot belongs to Vietnam, not Indonesia.
Thanks bayucca for the 2 links provided but on the first I feel that the pattern doesn't match at all, maybe due degradation of the died specimen? and the 2nd don't have the stripes at pronotum.
Will keep on Euselates sp. as suggested while checking the list provided by Daniele.
Thanks again!
No match found for Euselates perraudierei. I think with Euselates sp. we are on the safe side, but it is not Euselates perraudierei.
I just post some closer matches for references:

Hi Jordi! Great spotting! May I just ask how you arrived at the exact species ID? I checked a couple of sources and E. perraudierei is not listed for Indonesia. There are other Eusalates species listed for this area:

Thanks Felix!
Beautiful find, Jordi!
Thanks for the nomination Ashley
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
Thanks Mark!
Nice work Jordi
