Bald-faced hornet

Dolichovespula maculata

Description:

Dolichovespula maculata is a large yellowjacket species (member of family Vespulidae), distinguished from other yellowjackets by its black and white markings. The hairy body indicates that this individual is a worker (queens are hairless).

Habitat:

Discovered in the kitchen of my urban home. Common in the Vancouver metropolitan area.

Notes:

We often see workers in and around our compost bins.
Synonym: Vespula maculata
